How to accept payments for goods and services from customers in social networks: Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube

Not all Internet entrepreneurs need a website. Some products and services are easier, faster, and more profitable to sell in social networks, messengers, and single-page landing pages made with the help of the designer.

Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube are the best places to meet professionals right now: psychologists, nutrition consultants, sports coaches, massage therapists, career consultants and coaches, course and event organizers. Craft workshops, manufacturers of clothing, underwear, and accessories feel no less comfortable.

All of them are actively looking for ways to monetize the attracted audience, the ability to use payment tools that will give the best conversion to payment

What is a payment link

The payment link looks and works like a normal link and directs the user to a specially prepared and configured payment page.

The payment link is an extension of the payment button and automatically adapts conveniently to the size of the device screen, which is especially important for mobile payers. It allows you to quickly and safely accept payment, as well as, if necessary, request additional data from the client: first name, last name, phone number, post office address for delivery.

It’s simple.

  • You insert a payment link in a post or send it in a message.
  • The customer clicks on it, gets to the payment page, and pays for the purchase in any convenient way.
  • The money is transferred to your Bank account or card, and additional data is transferred to the merchant portal (your personal account) of FONDY. You will receive a notification about this by email or in the merchant portal mobile app.

But I can just ask to transfer the money on the card

Well, yes you can. This method works well in two cases: when there are few orders and a trust relationship is established with the buyer.

With a small number of orders, you will be able to track receipts to your account through your Internet banking and communicate with customers in correspondence. As soon as there are more than ten orders a day, difficulties begin: keeping track of everything is not so easy, the messenger swells from incoming messages, and the number of dissatisfied customers begins to raise.

There are also several non-obvious nuances associated with the cards. If the payer uses a card from another bank, the usual transfer will take longer, sometimes several days. When selling goods abroad, the payer will have to manually calculate the transfer amount at the current exchange rate. 

A separate problem is customers who are not satisfied with the product and they ask for a refund. In this case, the seller will have to manually transfer money back to the customer’s card via the Internet Bank, sometimes paying a Commission.

Using the payment platform allows you to solve these problems and gives several advantages to both parties:

  • Security for the buyer. Seeing that the payment goes through the payment system, the client pays more willingly, since he knows where to go if something goes wrong.
  • Security for the seller. If a fraudster tries to pay for a product or service using someone else’s card, the anti-fraud system will block such payment. Also, the seller does not show the number of his card or account explicitly.
  • Faster payments. Thanks to the tokenization mechanism, the payment platform stores the customer’s card data in encrypted form after the first purchase. When re-purchasing, they won’t need to enter the card number and expiration date. It is enough to confirm the payment by entering the CVV2 code. All payments, regardless of which Bank’s card the payer uses, occur almost instantly.
  • Convenient sales to foreign customers. For foreign payers, you can create a payment link in the local currency. And when credited, the seller will receive money in the currency in which its Bank accounts linked to FONDY are opened.
  • Support for Apple Pay / Google Pay. This option appears on the payment page and allows you to reduce the payment time to an average of 6 seconds, compared to more than 2 minutes for normal card payments.

  • Simplifies the return procedure. The seller just needs to find the payment in the admin panel and click one button to return the money to the buyer who is not satisfied with the product.

  • Regular payment. Using the payment link, you can set up regular debits from the customer. For example, every month for three months, if we are talking about paying for courses or a subscription service.

How to create a payment link for social networks: step-by-step instructions

Let’s say I sell handmade wallets. Like this.

After registering on the platform, I create my first payment link. I go to my personal account, in the menu Payment buttons → Button Designer. I select the merchant for which the button will be created and come up with a name for it (1). Let it be just Button 1. Next, specify the currency and amount of payment (2).

I plan to sell wallets to European and foreign clients, so I specify the us dollar as the currency. I enter the cost — $50 — and make sure to put a mark “Read Only” (3) so that the buyer cannot change the payment amount.

Choosing the type of payment allows you to make the withdrawal of money from the client’s card regular and automatic. This is useful for subscription services, info business, teachers of training courses, or those who regularly deliver the same batch of goods to customers

Then I create additional fields (4). I have about 10 sales planned per day, so I have time to call customers and clarify their product requests and write down the delivery address. So I only need 3 additional fields:

  • Product description (I add the “read only” attribute to it)
  • Name
  • Phone number

When the fields are ready, all I have to do is save the payment button (5) and get an active link to it and copy it.

And then I just create a post on my business page and insert a payment link in it (or in the comments below it). I launch a paid advertising post and wait for the first customers.

Customers read a detailed description of the product and want to buy it.

When they click on the link and make a payment, I will receive a notification, will see their phone number in the system and I will call back for more details on the order.

Since I now sell only 10 wallets a day, I feel comfortable working this way. But when the volume increases to 30 + units per day, I will not have time to call everyone. Then I will edit the payment link so that it asks the customer for the address and post office, so that I immediately send parcels and do not waste time on calls and clarifications.

Unusual cases: payment links in a real barbershop and office refrigerator

You can not only shorten the payment link but also turn it into a QR code that can be easily read by any smartphone with a camera. This allows you to use the potential of convenient payments in the real world.

For example, a barbershop owner who does not want to purchase a POS terminal can create a QR code from a payment link with a variable amount and paste this code on the reception desk. When the payment time comes, the customer will simply scan the code using the smartphone’s camera and choose Apple Pay or Google Pay as the payment method, so as not to remember the card number and not to rewrite the data for a long time.

According to a similar scheme, we have a special refrigerator in our FONDY office with Lunches for employees, which are delivered every morning by the supplier company. Next to the refrigerator is a price list for different dishes and a QR code for payment. The employee chooses their own food and uses the phone to pay for lunch within a few seconds. This scheme is built on trust but works flawlessly.

Life hacks for working with a payment link

1) When editing the amount or data that will be requested on the payment form, the payment link will be changed. Do not forget to update it on all sites where it was placed earlier.

2) The Payment form always requests the payer’s email address in order to automatically send him a payment receipt and save contacts for the seller. If you are sure that it is not necessary to request the buyer’s email, you can write to FONDY technical support and we will disable this field. 

3) Personally, make sure how much easier it is for customers to pay using payment links and forget about “throw money on my card” forever.
